Today’s challenge is going to involve writing, so…
- Prepare by having paper ready along with a pencil or pen.
- Silence your phone. This is only going to take five minutes. You can silence it for that long.
- Read and respond to the writing prompt.
You probably assumed the prompt was HERE, but not yet. I want you to prepare mentally. Once you read the prompt, try to respond to it by writing for five minutes straight.
For some of you, that’s easy-peasy.
For others, you mentally checked out the moment I said “write,” but stay with me!
Once you start, if you don’t know what to write, write exactly that: “I don’t know what to write…” Whatever thought is in your mind goes on the paper. Skip lines for new thoughts. Jump from one thing to another.
Like dumping the contents out of a bag or box,
things might be scattered everywhere — and that’s okay!
The goal is to avoid the self-censoring and over-correcting that happens in far too many people before their pen ever touches the page! Push past those doubts because there are nuggets of gold to be harvested on the other side.
Are you ready? Set a timer, then grab your pen and paper.
Let’s do this.
Here’s your question:
Name a person who has had a tremendous influence on your life.
Maybe they are from your childhood. Maybe you met them only a short time ago. Maybe you’ve known them forever or maybe you they have been in your life for just a moment. Independent of the time in your life, they left an imprint. They made a mark.
What was it about that person that made such an impact?
Was it something about them? About the circumstances you were in?
Chances are you’ve already thought of that someone, but your self-censor is ready to shut this down and keep you from expressing your thoughts. Don’t let it. Push down that voice and simply start thinking “out loud” on paper.
Ready? Go!
