Music therapy is an evidence-based practice that systematically uses music (be it singing, playing, and/or listening) to treat the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. How? Music therapy can help reduce pain levels, promote relaxation, improve communication skills, and provide comfort during difficult times; and is found in a variety of places such as medical hospitals, cancer centers, schools, alcohol and drug recovery programs, psychiatric hospitals, and correctional facilities.
The truth is that elements of music are a part of all of our lives. Each of us has a unique rhythm when walking and a specific intonational (melodic) pattern when speaking. A simple walk through your neighborhood will reveal a cacophony of sounds, each with its own own tone and timbre. Musicality is everywhere, and we are continuously attuning to our environment utilizing our own musical awareness even if we don’t think of ourselves as “musical” beings.
This consistent with the evidence that music therapy is beneficial for all individuals, both physically and mentally!
For fun, let’s perform an experiment. Following are two clips of the same scene from a Star Wars film: ne is with the music track, and one is without. What difference does the music make?
