The reality is that change is the one constant thing in our lives. In ten years, your life will not be the same as it is today⸺guaranteed! Perhaps that is more true in today’s day and age than in any other!
Sometimes changes are made by choice. Other times they are driven by another force. As people age, there is physical change (even for those who stay active!) and, sometimes, cognitive change.
Just as individuals change, so do relationships with family and friends. This continues to be true and the onset and during a person’s golden years! This can mean tremendous joy in an ever-deeper relationship or it can be a heart-breaking difficulty.
Conflict happens when one or both parties get wrapped up in their expectations of what the other should be. It’s not that we shouldn’t have expectations, but if they are unrealistic, unattainable, or inflexible, it very often becomes a frustrating situation for both parties. Sometimes the breakdown happens in the communication of those expectations.
What are your expectations for the next year?
What about five years from now? Ten??
What do you hope will happen?
What do you fear might occur?
Have you discussed these thoughts with anyone?
A spouse or significant other?
Another family member or a friend?
It’s vital to talk with the people in your life about what you need, want, and expect, both now and in the future; then set about putting measures in place to meet those needs. But those conversations are hard, and sometimes we feel inadequate to the task!
That’s why we are delighted to have Mary McCall join us this coming Saturday, April 22, from 12:30-2:00pm.
Mary McCall, Values Coach and Advance Care Planning Facilitator and Gerontologist, will present a brief overview of values-based approaches to mid- and late-life issues. She will teach you:
- how to articulate your values
- how to use them to make informed decisions
- how to clearly communicate your values to people in your life who need to know
